Grand jury releases scathing report on Stockton Unified School District predicting $30M budget deficit

The California Fiscal Crisis and Management Assistance Team will conduct an audit of Stockton Unified School District in light of a stinging 46-page report issued by a San Jaoquin Grand Jury that found the state’s 15th largest school district is headed for a financial shortfall of at least $30 million in future fiscal years. The report also found basic business practices and financial oversight practices lacking by the district’s board. 

“The Grand Jury found multiple examples supporting the conclusion of poor business practices, inadequate duty of care by the administration and Board, and lack of transparency to the public and Board, potentially risking the District’s solvency,” the report says. “If SUSD continues to operate as is, the District deficit will likely escalate.”
