Some Newark Charters’ Third Grade Reading Scores Outpace District

Third graders at Newark’s charter schools were on average twice as likely to be reading on grade level than third graders in district schools, according to state data. Twelve of Newark’s thirteen charter schools had higher reading proficiency rates.  There was, however, wide variation between charters in the city.  

“Our school leaders have immersed themselves in the science of reading and are ensuring our students receive targeted instruction that matches the research on how students best learn to read,” said Juliana Worrell, chief academic officer K-8 for Uncommon Schools, a charter network.  “That coupled with targeted, small group instruction (tutoring) built into the school day has allowed us to accelerate learning and get a large number of students to proficiency.”
