Each one of us has a role in ensuring every child in Rhode Island has access to a great education
Victor F. Capellan, CEO of the Rhode Island Education Collective, is calling on Rhode Islanders to champion education equity in 2025. In a recent op-ed, Capellan highlighted the stark achievement gaps in reading and math for low-income students and emphasized the urgent need for collective action.
“Our education system is failing our kids, especially in communities most in need,” Capellan wrote, urging policymakers, parents, and business leaders to prioritize student success. His proposed solutions include increased school funding, expanding charter school impact, strengthening career education, and growing dual-language programs.
Rhode Island has made progress in early education and school improvements, but Capellan insists more must be done. “The time for bold action is now,” he wrote, calling on residents to become education champions and fight for all students’ futures
