In the Heart of New Orleans, Newcomer Students Are Welcomed with Open Arms
Las Sierras Academy, New Orleans’ first program for newcomer high school students, offers an immersive environment focused on supporting newly arrived students, primarily from Central America. As part of the Collegiate Academies charter network, the academy focuses on English proficiency and academic skills over two semesters before students transition back to their home schools. Beyond academics, Las Sierras offers vital wraparound services, including mental health and social support, to help students navigate their new environment. The academy continues to push for equitable education for all newcomer students, advocating for statewide educational reform through the EXCELL policy, which would allow English learners to graduate by demonstrating content mastery through portfolio projects rather than standardized tests.
