New Orleans triples summer school enrollment amid pandemic

More than 13,000 students were slated to attend academic and social enrichment programming through their schools this summer in the Crescent City. That’s a three-fold increase over past years of summer learning and reflects a desire by parents to get extra academic and social supports for their children in the wake of the COVID school closures of the past year, according to local officials.

New Schools for New Orleans supported the expansion by providing $1.5 million in grants to schools across the city. The summer program grants were distributed to 72 schools who provided transportation and programming to support academic success in the coming school year.
