Shaheed-Young: ‘RISE’ up instead of tearing down schools

In a moving op-ed in the Indianapolis Recorder, RISE INDY founder Jasmin Shaheed-Young urges leaders and community members to commit to strengthening schools for young people rather than simply “throwing stones” at the system. She notes that RISE INDY’s team members are in schools every day, working hard to build greater connection between families, communities and educators. She calls on leaders to join the organization in focusing on improvement rather than aimless criticism. 

I ask you today, if you care about educational equity and making sure the foundation of our city is strong, ‘RISE’ up with me and get involved,” she writes. “Whatever path you choose, we’re in this together, and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for a stronger city built on a foundation of great public schools for all.
