Washington Post Editorial Board: DC’s schools have continue to improve under mayoral control
The Washington Post, in a recent editorial, cited new evidence from Mathematica’s study of DC’s school progress under its unique combination of mayoral control and robust public school choice. Despite calls for changes to the District’s system of school governance, the Post points to “outsize gains” of students on the National Assessment of Education Progress (“NAEP”) and other markers of student growth.
At the same time, the editorial board cautioned that “[t]here is still so much work to be done […] minority students still [lag] far behind their White peers. But playing musical chairs with who is in charge is not the solution but will only upend a system that has proved to be successful.”
